We're so excited you've decided to bring a little piece of Love You More Baking Co. into your kitchen!
This dried sourdough starter is made from the very same active starter I use to create my artisan sourdough loaves. Whether you're brand new to sourdough or returning to an old hobby, this starter is the perfect way to begin your baking journey.
With a little flour, water, and patience, you'll soon have a thriving starter of your own that can be used to bake countless loaves for years to come. I've included simple step-by-step instructions to help guide you through the reactivation process, so don't worry if you've never worked with sourdough before.
Thank you for supporting my small bakery. I can't wait for you to experience the joy of pulling your very own homemade sourdough loaf from the oven.
Happy baking!
Your dried starter packet
Bread flour
Water
A small glass jar
I highly recommend a food scale for the best results :)
Add the entire packet of dried starter to a glass jar. Crush the flakes into smaller pieces, this makes it much easier!
Add 28g warm water (80°-85° F.)
Stir and let sit for at least an hour. Some flakes may take up to a few hours to dissolve fully. It's helpful to stir the mixture occasionally.
**You may add a marker (line, rubber band, etc.) to mark where the starter began**
After all the flakes have dissolved, add 14g bread flour and mix. Cover loosely and leave at room temperature in your kitchen for a few hours (70°-85° F.) If your air temperature is less than the recommended temperature, you can place the jar in the oven with the light on. DO NOT place in an area that is 85°F. or higher, otherwise you run the risk of cooking your starter. Keeping it warmer just speeds the process up a bit.
Let the starter sit until bubbles appear, this could be as long as 12 hours. If it's been 24 hours and no bubbles, move on to the next step it should help.
Feed your starter again 1:1 ratio. For this step, feed your starter 14g warm water and 14g bread flower. Do not discard any starter at this point. Mark where the starter lands after you have fully incorporated the flour and water together. This will help you gauge how much your starter has grown, you're looking for a 2x rise! If your starter achieves this, you're ready to bake and get on a regular feeding schedule!
**Not sure if your starter is ready? Take a spoonful of the bubbly starter and place it in a glass with some water. If the starter floats, it's ready! If the starter sinks it is not ready. If you still do not have bubbles or rise, take out 28g and feed at a 1:1:1 ratio of starter, water, flour, and wait 4 - 12 hours depending on the temperature in your home, before feeding again without discarding.**
